Who likes mustard? Who likes wine? Here’s a palette featuring the rich colors of both!
I love creating material palettes for interiors based off tastes or foods. The colors we choose for palettes should support each other, and I have found that basing the palette in something like two tastes that are often paired together in a culinary setting can make for a successful pairing of colors and textures for spaces as well! This doesn’t always work, but in the case here of wine and mustard, they pair so nicely! The sleek and smooth textures of wine contrasted with the rough and grainy textures of seedy dijon mustard inspired the material textures here, and of course the contrast of the two colors.
Early in my interior education, we did an exercise in a materials class like this, we picked a word out of a hat of a descriptive taste - sour, sweet, bitter, salty, and umami - then created a material palette to express it. It’s an interesting way to think about the mood you’re creating in design, by mixing the senses together. I generally strive to select materials not only based on what they look like, but how they feel, what they remind us of, and what they evoke.
